One London data centre took down six UK banks at once
Google traced Wednesday's outage to a power event at a third-party facility feeding its europe-west2 region in London, starting around 07:00 BST and disrupting Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, HSBC, Barclays and Revolut, as CNN reported. Revolut customers couldn't make card payments or withdraw from ATMs for hours; the company insisted funds and data stayed safe, which is true and also not the point. Six major UK financial brands, competitors to each other in every other respect, all went dark because of a single regional dependency on one cloud provider. Google said service was mostly restored by early afternoon. The Bank of England's operational resilience rules require firms to plan for severe but plausible disruption to important business services. A shared cloud region going down because of a power fault at a third party is about as plausible as it gets, and it just happened to nearly all of them simultaneously.
